Mary Bey, his secretary since he arrived at ACC. is retiring at the will definately miss those eager young faces of students entering and/or returning to ACC each fall." She adds with a hint of humor ·that one thing she won't miss at all is "the sound of the copy machine! " There is a new program at Alpena Community College (ACC) called Program Progress Review (PPR), and its objective is to help update students on their degree requirements. The computer print-out will list · the course departments, the The PPR will not be available tor student use until next fall, seeing that there are a few problems to the system. Dean Hood is working at the solution to the problems. end of April. Mary Bey is well known and respected by many students. the deans. faculty and secretarial staff. and will be missed by all. According to Dean Davis. Bey 1e transition to the ACC campus very easy or 11111. coaching him on the procedures and policies of the campus. Also her repore with the students, knowing many by first name and put ting them at ease. had aided him in his job as Dean of Instructions. Bey has spent 11 · 1/ "2 years working for ACC. starting first as secretary to the Dean of Concrete Technology. and now as secretary to the Dean of Instructions . According to Bey. she has enjoyed working for ACC and states "I will miss the many wonderful people and friends I have been associated with at ACC: and When asked about her plans after retirement, she stated that she and het husband plan to travel and just relax this summer. According to her, "'There's a rumor that the weather is nicest between 8am and 4: 30pm during the summer months" and she plans to find out' Although Bey is never really idle, she plans to add to her already full volunteer time--a full schedule which already includes involvement with Zonta , Civic League, St. Jo hn's Altar Soc iety, and the ad ult cho r. She does hope to have more free time to pursue her hobbies which include antique collecting, photography, and travel. Bey·s prier work experiences includes working as ex cut ive secretary for the Selective Service Board in Alpena for 25 years, secretary to the president of People 's Bank and Trust (now known as NBD), and secretary for the Alpena Chamber of Commerce for 2 years. ACC is really going to miss Mary' / Friendly, smiling face and helpful attitude Dean Mike Hood has been developing a program for students to keep track of the coarses they have taken and of courses they should take in the future to meet their degree requirements. After a long time spent debug- ging the system , Dean Hood can now develop a computer printout for each student enrolled at ACC. The student's name, and major is all that is needed to obtain this progress review. amount of credits needed to fullfill the degree requirement, the courses to choose from, and the amount of credits already achieved. At the end of the report is the student's graduation status. This is a list of total registration credits and iota! amount of earned credits. The student's transfer credits are shown and also their grade point average (GPA). This new program will hopefully help new students to understand what classes should be obtained in order to receive their Associates Degree . Sophomore students should also make use of this program In the near future Dean Hood plans to develop an in-service train- ing for faculty to upgrade their understanding of the PPR computer printout. In doing so, the students will be able to receive their PPR forms and have them explained in detail by their advisor. This will be an advantage for students planning to graduate by having written know]ege of their requirements that need to be filled for graduation, prior to their first application to graduate·. Students choo-se Senate election • winners The Student Senat" recently held elections for the 1987-88 officers. The post ions were won by; Mike Fourriier. President, Jeff Shelby, Vice-President, Chuck Witt , Secretary and Scott Bartz, Trel\- surer . Mike Fournier is curre.ntJy a ~enior at Alpena High School.When Shelby states the reasons why he got involved in Student Senate were because, "I wanted to be involved in some student activity if I am going to be here next year. This Senate has rules in which to follow , where as the Lumberjack doesn't." states, "I wanted to get involved in something. I found out about the Senate through friends and by just walking past the office." Student Actiuities e·oard plans festiuities for May I When asked how he felt about winning the position of Vice- President , he commented , "it doesn' t matter who won, Nick is. going to be here next year to help out. It's good to have competi- tion." Scott Bartz is a freshman at ACC and his choice is to transfer to -CMV, Cen tra] Michigan University. As of now Bartz is taking up ,genera] studies. It's that time of year when the snow has melted , the sun is shining, and spring fever is setting in. To help welcome in spring the student activities board is sponsor- ing Spring Fling Festivities Day May I. throughout ACC Campus. It will be a day full of fun-filled activities to participate in. or a leisurely day just 10 watch others. and view cars that the aulo body shop will be displaying on the campus lawns . Mr. Miesen. with the helping h:md of An n ML"ldrum and Mr. Matteson, will be the chefs of the day , roasting a pig for all to eat between 4:00-4:30 P.M. Other refreshments will be offered to go along with the pig roast. To finish off the day a dance is tentatively being pfanned for the evening if a band is found . Spring Fling Day at ACC is open to the L'On1111unity and is sponsored and raid by the Student Activities Board.
