There have been a lot of new, young bands rising up lately. · ,Personally a lot of them sound the ; ;,same to ·me. That's why I was overly impressed with the fresh talent of Boy Hits Car (you have to love that name). This hard rock quartet of C. · : R~gg, vocals, and 12-string : a·coustic guitar, Louis, guitar, Scott, bass, and Michael drums, ;,.just released their major label ~~ s~l:f-titled debut. They also just .: ·. 9orppJeted an ·impressive showing _,or;i. t);is year's Sno-Core Tour, opening for acts such as Fear Factory and Kittie. :.,. 't Originally from Los Angelos, ., California, Boy Hits Car was f6rt'ned in February of 1993. 0 They originally released an album '·e!}titled, "My Animal ( currently "f1ot in print)," in 1998, but due to the 'lack of records sold, their small record label had to drop the act. The band then spent a lot of '\ """' ..... ·. tqe time playing a tough tour u• schedule. Eventually they gained ., 1\ .. • notice from several record labels, ~ and-were soon signe'd to Wind- r \ I ,· up Records, where they hooked ·:~~P. \\Tith producer, GGGarth I -. I, (Rage Against the Machine, Mudvayne) and from there this overall impressive album was made. Their second album is an incredible blend of punk and metal riffs that definitely hooks you. I could have seen Incubus producing this kind of material, had they not gone soft recently. Boy Hits Car even mixes in India culture music to give the album a unique and beautiful sound, something which a lot of today's bands lack. The vocal styling of C. Regg is definitely fun to listen to. In some ways he reminds me of Serj, System of a Down's lead singer, in how he chooses to sing and not growl all the time. The C.D.'s stand out tracks include "Unheard," "Going to India," and "I'm a Cloud," the album's first single . Boy Hits Car is one of those bands that you know are going to make it big. I knew it the first time I listened to this C.D. They are proof that it's okay to be different, just so long as you work hard to achieve your goals. This album is 1 must purchase. Summer romance in March ROBIN SAUVE Staff Writer "Picnic" is a steamy love story set in th~ 1950's during a Labor Day weekend. Written by William Inge, famous for other plays such as "Splendor in the Grass" and "All Fall Down", the play is entertaining, fascinating, as well as, humorous. The production will be held at the Granum Theatre on March 22, 23, and 24 at 7:30pm and March 25 at 2:00pm. Althought it is dated; I have seen plays that are antiquated The Lum.berjack 10 and are still enjoyable. The love triangle is interesting and keeps you guessing on what is going to happen next. Director Kristine Titus, s the is passionate about her plays and it shows in her direction. The play begins with Hal (Joshua Kumrits) the hunky drifter, who rides the rails, literally, into a small Midwest town to visit an old friend from college (Mike Furtaw). Hurting for money, Hal offers to work for an old women (Lisa Kraft), who kindly invites him in to her home. Hal soon encounters the woman's next-door neighbors, the Owens. The family consists of a mother (Denise Fleener from "I Hate Hamlet") and her two daughters, Madge (Heather Pines) and her younger sister Millie (Kristal Cook) . Hal discovers that Madge is dating his old college friend, and he quickly renews old acquaintances with his fraternity brother. The annual Labor Day picnic is being held that very evening, so Hal accompanies the immature Millie to the event. The play hinges on the audience believing that Hal and Madge's courtship is probable. Hal tells Madge that he loves her after being with her for only one day. The play wants us to believe that Hal is the only wonderful man in town, while Madge is the only women worth having. Will they be destined to be together? Another interesting romance that unfolds during the play is between the schoolteacher, Rosemary (JenniferAlsup who performed in Ms. Warren's Profession) and her love interest for many years, Howard (Chip Redker also from Ms. Warren's Profession). Shawn Lewis and Jennifer Lafleur play Rosemary's friends who have respectful parts. Aggie Ferguson will be helping the crew dance to the sounds of the 50's. Although I only had an opportunity to review two rehearsals, I am looking forward to seeing the play. So get rid of the winter blues and see "Picnic" to raise your temperature! The BeJtles:• still selling J hJz1/lion copies RYAN SPAULDING Staff Writer **** Overkill is a term that came to mind when I listened to The Beatles latest release "One." This album is a compilation of the Fab FourfromLiverpool's27number one singles. They are all here from "Love Me Do," to "The Long and Winding Road." Now I don't have a problem with The Beatles. I enjoy some of their songs. I even grew up listening to them on the oldie's station my mother would listen to. "Come Together," is still one of the coolest songs I've ever heard. The problem is that when I see this album I think to myself, ' "Someone needed to make a house payment." I mean come on the Anthologies were awesome, but is this really necessary? The Beatles are already cemented into the history books. There's no need to drag their immortality through the mud with this album. CLASSIFIEDS· Paul, John, George, and Ringo are all on this C.D., big surprise. Another surprise is that this album is really good. Hard to believe an album composed of the number one singles of one of the world's greatest bands would actually be decent. I mean this is The Beatles we' re talking about. They could take all of their worst songs, put them all on a C.D ., and it would still sell a bazillion copies. The point is nothing here is new. It's the same now as it was then, only digitally re-mastered of course. FORSALE 1978 Black fl 00 Ford Truck . $300 or best offer. Call Jenni at 517-785-4988.
