Avid readers have a greater sense of self and the world around them. My favorite quote: "Our prisons aren't filled with readers". Think about it.. .. She goes on to list common sense, easy to apply methods to instill this life-long love. For example: #33 & #14 Spehd as much money on books as you do sports equipment or Disney ·videos. #4 & #7 Don't worry about kids reading only "good" books. Make sure they someday enjoy the classics by not pushing them too early. #25 If they request a book that you know is too difficult buy it for them anyway. Leonhardt says "Avid readers are the students with a future." That is the goal for all of us as parents and educators isn't it? This is an extremely easy read One night could improve your child's future or give you new insight on your methods of teaching. 99 W\h fi"i"i:fl Kll!'I 1U LOVE . · WRITING 99 Ways To Get ll~:~J!~:~:":~.~~~:. If you are a King fan, or just enjoy a good story, you won't regret spending a weekend with it. King is a lot of things, but no on can deny he is a fine storyteller. he tells the story, what he can remember of his childhood and early years as a young husband, father and writer. There are sections of this part that one can't help laughing out loud. The second part of the book is more for the writerly types, but non-writers shouldn't write it off (no pun intended .. . ) . It gives insight to how the Master of the Macabre works, what he thinks of certain rnles and what he calls the writer's toolbox. In the final third of the book, we are intr(?duced to the real, gentle and kind man that is King. We see him as a genuine person, on the other side of tragedy. This was written after his accident. He was hit by a van, while walking, it had devastating consequences. Doctors were unsure he would ever walk again, and for a moment, writing was the furthest thing from his mind. . He is still in recovery, but is writing again. This section reveals his thoughts on life, and what it is all really about. For ten years his underground comic "Eightball" has received critical acclaim. Clowes has won many "Harvey", and "Eisner". awards for his story telling. The "Harvey", and "Eisner", awards are the comic book industries rendition of the "Golden Globe", and "Academy Awards", in the movie industry. Speaking of movies; Dan Clowes looks like he is about to enter popular culture because a story from his "Eightball" comic has been transformed into a movie and it will be released in theaters in June. The movie will star Thora Birch from the film "·American Beauty" and character actor Steve Buscemi from "The Big Lebowski", and "Fargo." It will be the feature film debut of director Terry Twigoff who had won "Best Film" at the Sundance Film Festival for his documentary "Crnrnb." Unlike all comics that are turned into movies, you won't see a marketing tie in at Pizza Hut or Taco Bell selling action figures. Ghost World does not pertain to ghosts or super heroes of any kind. Ghost World is a term that means: "the time after high school where people start the rest of their lives." Ghost World is easier to · compare to J.D. Salingers "Catcher in the Rye" then to "Batman." That~s the appeal of this comic. Many people become discontent with comics for male adolescent power trips that dominate the comic book racks today. Ghost World is a comic book about the friendship of two girls.
