CAMPUS UPDATE, January 24, 1979, Page 4 FACULTY FEATURE 2 a Robert Jones By Arthur Kniep “%t seems,’ disclosed Robert Jones, instructor of graphics arts at ACC, “that there was always a teacher in our family; my mother was a teacher and her mother before her.’ Originally from the Detroit area, Jones started teaching at Lincoln High in a vocational program simi- lar to his position today. A soft-spoken, mild-mannered individual, Jones relates to his stu- ts with a | of enth: Jones spent last spring practicing for the Drummond Island Marathon. He paced himself for an eight- mile sprint and entered the race with expectant confidence. Part- icipants in the race included both professionals and amateurs. Being a competitive runner, Jones felt his chances of finishing were good. Although he didn’t win the race, Jones commented, “| didn‘t intend to win...| .set my own goal to finish at my own pace, and | did.” “ve been teaching printing now for almost twenty years,” said Jones, “| feel it's a fascinating subject. To me, it just seems to ~ come natural.” Jones received his BA from Cen: tral Michigan University in 1957 and his MA from University of Michigan in. 1963. But to increase your Jones spends each summer on Drummond Island with his family. He keeps busy either fishing, jogging or cutting wood for the fireplace. He is always involved in some type of outdoor activity. During the school year he enjoys. making maple syrup, a hobby combining physical; effort and patience. Jones also enjoys cross-country skiing and jog- ging two miles each day. Exhibits Open By Rick Sterling Three new art exhibitions recently arrived in Alpena and will be show- ing throughout the first quarter of 1979 at the Jesse Besser Museum. The first of these is an interesting assortment of historical maps en- titled Maps of the Great Lakes. This collection, which was assembled in 1972 through donations, consists of 27 maps dating from 1669 to 1874 that portray the various in- terpretations of the geography of the Great Lakes Region during that period. The second exhibition which is on show in the basement of the muse- um has bi been named The Sunshine People. This _is a collection of ithographs from world-famous art- The third and largest of new exhibits at.JBM is an exhibit of various works of graphic art. This collection, consisting of 45 pieces, is simply called 1978 Acquisitions and will be shown through Feb- ruary 25. STUDENT FEATURE Meyers By Mary Kelley Paul Meyers, president of ACC’s Student Senate, and a scholastically active student, doesn’t allow him- self to remain idle for any length of time. Living, just outside the village of Posen with his parents, Meyers attended Posen High School and graduated in June, 1976. The fol- lowing September he attended ACC. Majoring in chemical engineering, Meyers is fascinated with physical science. This semester he’s enrolled in Calculus |11, university physics, stati peech commu ions and ALPENA’S ONLY{ life in a sleepy early fifties. Besides keeping himself busy with homework, Meyers is em- ployed by ACC in the work-study program and by a gas station in Rogers City. e also was assistant varsity football coach at Posen High School last fall. Now that that’s through for the season, he’s coaching the Posen Junior High basketball team. Meyers is also a member of the Men‘’s Bowling Team in Rogers City, and participates in. track and pool. In the line of hobbies, he picks away at his guitar—playing his favorites, country and church music which he plays for St. Casimir Church in Posen. At one time he played for the ACC Collegiate Sing- ers; but he can’t seem to fit it into his schedule lately. Next fall he plans to attend Michigan Technical University to continue his chemical engineering studies. The aspiring ski champion, played by Robert Redford, trains with a tough and demanding ski coach, played by Gene Hackman, only to ~ discover that it’s lonely at the top.
