“ACC Board Acts On Many Key Issues At the recent Board of Trustees meeting held Thursday, January 19th, Alpena’ Community College’s Forestry Program was abolished and Athletics was reinstated. The Board had to make two tough decisions. Dr. Lee Britton, Board member, stated to the au- dience, “However the Board votes tonight, | want you to know that it is extremely difficult for all of us.“ Those were Britton’s words just before the 6 to: 1 vote was cast to abolish the Forestry program. A condition was set, however that a need study be conducted to deter- mine whether a similar program should be added to the curriculum. The lone No vote was cast by Brit- ton who stated, “| fear that when we lose programs such as the Fores- try program, we are losing our uni- queness, we will end up being just like every other community college in the state.” Forestry Gone . . ‘Next, the Board acted on the long-awaited athletics issue. After hearing Ron Ross and Barb Man- ning reiterate the Student Senate’s position favoring athletics one last ~ time, the Board heard from. Max Lindsay, the only Administrator who did not sign the resolution be- fore the Board which was not in fa- vor .of reinstating athletics. Mr Lindsay simply stated, “| just feel that if the students are willing to_ pay for it, they should be able to have it.” Lindsay then sat down amid thunderous applause from the larger than normal audience. Dr. Britton received similar ovation when he made his previously men- tioned comments. Next, Dr, Donnelly spoke out against. reinstating athletics. Then Dr. Britton proposed that . . .”The Board reinstate athletics at ACC in the fall of 1984 . . ., to be paid for by assessing an Activities Fee of $12.50 for full-time students and . $7.50 for part-time students. This fee shall only be charged to stu- dents on the Alpena campus, not at Wurtsmith.” This is what the Student Senate had proposed. Sally Park quickly seconded the propo- sal. Owen Lamb, drafting instructor at ACC said that many large industries are now using CAD-CAM units for pre- cision drafting and design. The CAD-CAM is a computer which will assist many students in design and will assure accuracy. Mr. Lamb said he would like to see all the draft- ing students familiar with CAD- CAM before leaving ACC. Also on the agenda was elec- tion of new Board members. The election results are as follows: er Bauer re-elected Chairman; Mel Matchet re-elected Vice-Chair- man; Gail Marshall re-elected Secre-* tary; and Sally FAS re-elected. as Treasurer. — AN Questron This year 2,500 new summer employment jobs and urges students who wish to™ find summer work in their chosen professional fields to write for in-- formation.
