Let me reanalyze those how I know what has removed the beers from your hands land taken that Fort Lauderdale look lout of your eyes. We're having a very difficult time finding new of scraping together sufficient funds for advancing furthur into your college education, “aren't we? Don't feel too depressed leveryone. The bad scene that is icoming down on all of you isn't just confined to our quaint little institution of ACC, yet its happening all across America and fits not only the middle class who are feeling these frustrations anymore. The problem of ateraine appreciable funds for college is seaping into all classes of our society. Of course, compared to Lado-China we are in financial aid heaven but as a country with one of the highest standards of living one would think the educational proccess beyond high school would be a little easier. Send your thank you notes to’ 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC in care of Ronnie Reagan and his horde of program Slayers. San RET TO TOT February 29 is the date set for the millage election for ACC. If passed, this one-mill request amounts to approximately $20 a year for the average homeowner. The money provided Would be used to improve quality programs and services so our students are Coa prepared for today's job ae following are some reasons as to “why ACC is Tequesting the one-mill increase: *ACC has served our community for 35 years and has operated with the same millage since 1977. *With federal and state cutbacks, community colleges must rely on more local support.. ACC currently gets 10.7% of its funding ars the matter everybody? from local taxes, compared to.an___citizens. @¥ET acc NEEDS THE SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE average of 25% for other colleges. *Tuition must remain affordable. Many work and cannot afford to attend a four-year university. ACC's new president, Dr. Newport, had the following to say tegarding the upcoming election: “My personal assessment in grading the college is that we have « *A‘ caliber people in every segment of the institution. But, financial resources available to the college are failing to provide the necessary wherewithal for the college to adequately deliver its services. This makes the upcoming election. an extremely important one to the college's ability to deliver quality services and programs to our Area Democrats Days Former Michigan Governor G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams was remembered by local Democrats for DeLysle Henry's political science class on Thursday, Febuary 4. Frank LaBita, a member of the Democratic Party and personal friend of Williams, recalled his days compaigning for the late governor. LaBita told the students "Soapy never lost his feelings for the working-class people”. Ken Oke, chairman of the Democratic Party of ‘Alpena County, told how Williams always brought out the best in people and urged for individual participation in the political process Both Oke and LaBita spoke on the contributions Williams made for the Democratic Party and for Michigan. When Williams was Recall with Soapy Governor Williams changed the Republican-run state to a two party state. Williams was also responsible for the building of the Mackinac Bridge, and the first to walk it. Governor Williams died on elected to the governorship it February 2. PROBLEM OF Student loans are available but they are not always "guaranteed" as its title so elusively advertises. Sometimes students can not find needed credit to pull a loan h. Also, the drawback to loans is the fact that by piliny up loans over the course of 46 years Students find themselves $30,000 in debt by the time they graduate. The fact that congress, just this year, has set mild restrictions on how much and to whom banks can distribute loans to also ads greatly tot he frustrations. Government officials are claiming that "money is available. Just apply." I brought this adage to Assistant Dean of Students, es Lindsay and he elaborated on is point for me. Lindsay mentioned the fact there is plenty of money which goes unclaimed but this money which is said to be “available” is available mainly though scholarships. which apply to "specific criterion” groups, as Lindsay stated. The reason these monies go unclaimed is due to the fact that they are in the form of scholarships which apply only to, hypothetically speaking, Anglo-Saxon Americans whose -ATTAINING ancestory is made up of 25% of the earliest Canadian Viking where 25% of the mothers were red blooded American Indians (Cherokee only). With college tuition rising at a rate twice that of inflation and programs to “aid” students being cut (“altered”, as the government has put it) and at the same time, it is no wonder college students are turning to Mtv for guidence. Put a kid in a desperate situation and well...I think you get the point. The major problem students everywhere are facing is the fact that while their parents do not make enough money to put their kids through college, they make too much cash to receive adequate aid from the government, if any at all. : I think we would all agree that education is the pathway to our future and if getting a higher education means searching every “nook and cranny” for sufficient funds than so be it. But when every "nook and cranny" has not a hint of a single penny, the situation becomes quite desperate. And so it goes. Survival File - Are you satisfied with all of your instructors? Students at ACC are very fortunate to have highly-skilled instructors in many areas. But, ee a problem Your case, don't just sit in the snack bar and ‘Sieiahh about the situation. Something CAN be done! Teachers are evaluated on a regular basis. This is done by a peer faculty member, students, an administrative member, and a self-appraisal. = The peer faculty member examines” the instructor's objectives and goals. They also sit in on the class and look. at how well the instructor communicates with their students. Students, usually at the end of the Semester, are asked by certain instructors to evaluate them by filling out a form. This information stays with the instructor. Z The administrative member also sits in on the class.: This person looks for demonstrated knowledge of subject matter, evidence of appropriateness al effectiveness of his/her teaching techniques, and an indication of student learning/involvement. should “be* noted. that occasionally an instructor is Dissatisfactions evaluated on a course outside of his/her teaching major. This should be taken into consideration when the instructor is evaluated. Students’ that still have a problem are referred to the Student of the ACC Student Handbook. This handbook states. that "Students with complaints about the college operations should be referred to the Student Services Department. The Dean of Students will then refer the student to the appropriate supervisor. The supervisor will handle the initial informal discussion with the intent to solve the problem.” The catalog continues to state that "Students are referred to the appropriate department chair. The depaftment chair has an informal discussion with the student and takes the necessary steps to solve the problem. The department chair’ will inform the instructor of complaint. If the complaint is against the department chair, the student is then referred to another department chair of the President of the Faculty Council." If the problem is not settled by this step, "the department chair is to instruct the student to submit a formal written statement to the Dean of Instruction, The Dean will follow the due process. (i.e., written notice/hearing)." of the fittest, said Mr. Darwin. If fitness is measured in terms of wealth than our own government is slowly but surely taking the word survival and throwing it out the window. Sorry Charlie! wu The Paperworks will be returning © textbooks to the publishers soon. Buy all of your books by February 12!
