McCOURT 15 $ ‘ Frank McCourt As many of you might know, Frank McCourt, women's basketball coach, has retired his position effective May 1988. McCourt first began coaching in 1971 as the assistant men's coach. He then started coaching the women's team in 1980 at ACC His most memorable team was during his first year, 1980-81, OFF THE COURT where the women finished the season 23-6 then went on to Regional 12 finals. McCourt's decision to resign from this position was based on the time-consuming schedule of being head-coach in which he missed a ot of his job as a counselor at ACC It just became too much for him to give his full attention. Replacement Roger B. Phillips has been named to replace Frank McCourt as the women's head basketball coach. McCourt resigned in October effective at the end of the year, or whenever ACC could find a Suitable replacement. "We're very sorry to see Frank go, but we are happy to have a good replacement," said ACC athletic director Tom Bennett. Phillips previously coached the Lady Jacks from 1978-80. In the 79-80 season, he guided them to the MCCAA's Eastern Conference Title with an 18-5 record. Their record in 78-79 was 15-9, the Lady Jack's first winning season. Phillips has also coached Alpena High School and Thunder Bay Junior High School for R.B. Phillips basketball. His overall record is 181-80. in 17 seasons. "Offense-minded" is how Phillips regards himself as a coach. A CMU graduate, Phillips also teaches government and journalism at Alpena High School.
