SS Page 3 INTERESTING CLUB SHORTS on CAMPUS Many students at Alpena Community College have been involved in a club at some time during their education at this institution. Service clubs, social clubs, and academically oriented groups are among the organizations available to student. Bringing the school year to a close, the Lumberjack staff did a bit of research to see what sort of activities each club has been involved with during the past two semesters. BESSER TECH ASSOCIATION The esser Technical Association had several fund- raisers this year. The include 50/50 raffles, a jelly bean contest, the Florida trip, and numerous bake sales. They use the money that is taised from these activities to make trips to various places in Michigan. Such places include Steel Case Company in Grand Rapids, General Motors in Saginaw, and the Buick, Olds Assembly Plant in Lansing. The BTA should be commended for their fundraisers, because they raise enough money so the students do not have to pay for their trips. BUSINESS CLUB On Wednesday, April 20th, the Business Club went on an educational trip to Toronto, Canada. In a recent interview, club President Ron Hall commented on the active organization. This past year, the Law Enforecment club was involved in many different types of fund-raising activities. They went on field trips to down-state correctional facilities which proved to be quite a learning. experience. The Senate has accomplished a lot of great things this year. Take for example, the Delta Consortion. This was a meeting of Community Colleges in Michigan formed together to discuss common problems and ways to handle different situations. They also sent representatives of ACC to Washington D.C. to lobby. There they met with different legislators to discuss education funding and bills pending in Congress. But the Senate has done many things that the student can directly see and take part. The list begins with dances; the Senate has put on vis department store in order to learn its business practices and about the Toronto stock exchange. In addition to visiting a major advertising agency and a Toronto local newspaper, the club also met with people associated with the Toronto business world. ACC PLAYERS Due to a lack of interest among the student body, it is possible that one of the college's clubs may cease to exist. The ACC Players, a group of students interested in theater, hi had trouble getting its act together. (Please pardon the pun.) According to the group's President, Joyce Wait, there has not been enough interest or involvement generated to keep them going. Players will be holding one more meeting, before the semester ends, to decide the club's fate. They will either elect new officers and try again next year or they will end the club. If interested in attending the meeting, watch the Splinter for the date and time. working toward their goal by involvement in Law Enforcement Day at the Alpena Mall. They also held bake sales, mug sales, car washes, and even raffles, the latest of which includes prizes of a motel, a dinner for 2, and Thunder Bay Theater tickets. Hall continued saying that "we're committed toward the Sheriff Duane A. Badder Memorial Scholarship Fund." It is a scholarship established to help further educational opportunities in the law enforcement area. Looking into the future, with this year's impressive membership of 24, Hall stated “we've done real well...we achieved our goal.” NURSING ASSOCIATION The Nursing Club will have 22 students graduating on May 11, with an associate degree in nursing. The Pinning ceremoney will begin at 7:30p.m. at the East Campus gym, and the guest Speaker will be State Representative John Pridnia. On May 12, they also will have 15 people graduating from the health care program. Congratulations to all luates! CONCRETE CLUB The Concrete Club was a success for another year at ACC. Throughout the year they were involved in college activities such as winning the garbage can painting competition, and helping with Homecoming. The club has also helped to beautify the campus by building a patio out behind BTC snack bar. The patio will be finished in a few weeks. The Student Senate, Campus Activities Board, and the Lumberjack is funding for some plant life to be placed around the patio.
