SATELLITE UPDATE ACC has formed a tele-communications committee, consisting of the following faculty and administration: Charles Tetzlaff, Elbridge Dunckel, David Dierking, J. Wesley Law, Helen Malandrinos, Paulette Frantz, Ivan McLaren, Chuck Wiesen, John McCormack, Robert Foumier. Currently there are two 25-inch viewing monitors assembled in Rm. 450 of the NRC for viewing. According to Tetzlaff, "The viewing of programs is limited to ins inistration. The conection for particapation during the question and answer periods. Tetzlaff said, "All instructors and administration will be encouraged to attend conferencés.” The cost for each conference ranges from two-five hundred dollars depending on the subject. The cost appears expensive but is actually a savings when compared to the number of people viewing vs. the cost to send each individual to such an event. Tetzlaff indicated, "The tape can be viewed up to fourty-five days, then it must be erased or a fee for the tape will be charged." The tele-course is another option that the committee is researching. This program would enable ACC to offer ocurses not currently being offered at ACC. A tepresenative from ETOM is scheduled to appear late October to discuss with committee members, the posibility of tele-courses at ACC. congress he will see to it that th economic « 0] nt plan SENATOR'S HOLD CONFERENCE ACC was one of the stops on the campaign trail for U.S. Senator Don Riegle, democrat, who is presently running for relection, and Mitch Irwin Michigan's state senator who is tunning for election to congress. Even though U.S. Senator Don Riegle praised ACC for its connection with Besser Co. by stating, "Alpena is one of the best for having its’ business community connected to its education. ", State Senator Mitch Irwin was the voice of the press conference, held on Aug 30th. in 1m 450 of the CRDNRC building. Senator Irwin informed listeners of the economic development success at Kinchloe, a US. Air Force base in the upper peninsula that closed 10 years ago, and now, due to the help and support of Senators’ Riegle and Irwin, the economy in that area is heathier than before the base closed. After Senator Irwin's informative story of Kinchloe, he went on to say, that both,he and Senator Riegle are in favor of a regional economic development plan for Northeastern Michigan. Irwin added, that if he is elected to into action. The development plan is focused on getting tax dollars back into Michigan to streghten its’ economy. Senator Irwin indicated that the development plan along Don Riegle and Mitch Irwin with local help would enable more jobs to surface. He said, "Improved training, better roads, and tevolving loans will help support the growth of the economy in Northeastern Michigan". Nearing the end of the conference, Senator Riegle clearly stated, " Alpena Community College will have a major role in the economic development plan," which could imply that the education and training programs at ACC could directly affect the a ee L The ress conference concluded after a short twenty two minutes. The listeners seemed Satified with the goals of the senators’ and of the regional economic development plan. However, questions remain as to how effective the development plan will be in strenghting ACC Senator Riegle continued, "I am pledging to work hand and hand with Mitch Irwin and Alpena to ensure that the resources are directed towards helping Northeastern Michigan". A NEW DEPARTMENT AT ACC Among the new departments at ACC is the Center for Economic and Human Resource Development. It has been in operation since August 1, 1988. The Center covers such areas as, assessment, budget, staff hiring and development, community service and several other areas. The center has a staff of 13 people. According to Executive Director Chuck Wiesen, it serves as the "outreach arm to the college". They have been organized together by the president of the college, Dr. Donald Newport, who felt this would better serve the students and the public. (GR Chuck Wiesen and Margie Hunt Mr. Chuck Wiesen is the Executive Director of the new Center of Economic and Human Resource Development. His Function is to coordinate the four departments which operate under that title. Mr Wiesen directs budget, staff hiring, and development, as well as handles strategic planing. Before coming to ACC, Wiesen spent five and a half years at Wurtsmith Airforce base,where he managed their extension center. From 1975-1981, he served as community service director.
