    Alpena Fire Department Sleigh. A sleigh provided fast transportation of firemen during winter fires.

    Logs were easier to transport during the winter on ice roads. A sprinkler wagon sprinkled water on the road to freeze into an ice path for the horse teams to pull a log sled.

    Engine House No. 1 of the Central Fire Station. This building replaced the original Engine House No. 1, which burned in 1910. It was located on the corner of Third Avenue and River Street.

    Adam's Bookstore, publisher of this postcard, provided Alpena souvenirs for many years.

    Logs on a sled being pulled by horses. Sprinkling water on the road and allowing it to freeze made the sled easier to pull.

    In order to make it easier to pull this gigantic load of logs, a water sprinkler tank wet the roadway to create a surface of ice.
