Haltiner Collection

    Earl Girard was hired by the WPA in the mid to late 1930s to write histories of the Alpena area. This is his history of the U.S. Federal Building in Alpena, Michigan.

    The Churchill Lumber Company mill was located at the mouth of the Thunder Bay River. They also had store, wagon shop, and coal yard.

    Alpena High School (also called Central High School) was built in 1891 of brick and locally quarried stone. On April 14, 1940, it was destroyed by fire.

    Long Lake, 9 miles north of Alpena, has long been a destination for local residents and tourists. The shores are lined with homes and summer cottages. The lake offers some of the best fishing in the

    Adam's Bookstore, publisher of this postcard, provided Alpena souvenirs for many years.

    Birch Hill is an area near Grand Lake in Presque Isle County. It is very scenic and popular with tourists. The Birch Hill Hotel was built here in the early 1900s.

    The Bungalo Inn, located at 215 State Avenue, was a favorite tourist destination. Located across from Bay View Park, its location was excellent. The Inn was run by Mrs. Ann Vander Noot.
